Going Organic

There decision about whether to buy organic foods or other items in the grocery store is a difficult one for many families. The cost of pesticide and chemical-free products is often a deterrent for shoppers who are budget-conscious. Many families believe they cannot afford to eat foods that are all natural and free of chemicals. Others do not believe there are any benefits in buying such products.

While organic foods do cost more, they can often provide more nutrients. Produce that has been sprayed with pesticides generally has lower nutritional value. Therefore, a person needs to eat more of the same food the get the same nutritional value. This makes products free of pesticides and chemicals more nutritious per pound. This is an especially important concept for fruits and vegetables that may be sprayed with chemicals.

Even if they are washed off before consumption fruits and vegetables may absorb some chemicals. Apples, bananas, and cucumbers are some that tend to absorb more chemicals than others. If families cannot afford to purchase all fruits and vegetables free of chemicals they can focus on buying those few items in all natural varieties.

Buying organic foods is cost effective, good for the environment, and good for the local economy. It is cost effective in many cases because lower amounts can be consumed to get the same nutrients as from other brand. Food produced without the use of chemicals keep the soil healthy. Chemical fertilizers and insecticides do not replenish the nutrients in the soil.

Most foods offered in grocery stores and local markets that are produced using all natural means come from local farmers. This means less fuel is used to bring them to market. It also means that buyers are supporting local farmers by keeping them in business and allowing them to spend more in the community.
