All Natural Remedies

Herbalism is a medicinal practice that some people exercise because they do not believe in taking artificial pharmaceutical medicines. It is believed that there are herbal remedies for each kind of illness and and that the mind and body can both ward off these problems with a little help from herbs and natural substances. There has been evidence that supports the idea of herbs working naturally to ease the symptoms of certain illnesses.

One example of herbal remedies that have worked well for an illness is the passion flower. Normally people who have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder are given drugs such as benzodiazapines. A study of 198 people were examined for the effects of passionflower used as a remedy for anxiety.  A significant amount of students reported that passionflower increased their work performance and relieved anxiety, having similar effects as the drugs but not as intense. They claimed that the passion flower made them less tired than the benzodiazapines.

Researchers also compared the herb St. John's Wort to the drug Paxil in a study that was taken in 2008. 251 patients were treated for depression. Half of these patients who were taking the St. John's Wort reported improvement within six weeks. Only one third of the patients who were taking the Paxil reported improvement.

The herb Ginseng has been found to be quite effective for weight loss and diabetes. It was administered to mice in an experiment and was found to cause a loss of body weight within four weeks of the beginning of treatment.

As with pharmaceutical medications, there are some adverse effects associated with herbs. However, if taken with care they can benefit a person as much if not more than prescriptions medicines. It all boils down to preference and what each person decides he or she will put into the body.
